Michael J. Zehnpfennig, MD

Dr. Michael Zehnpfennig is a minimally-invasive colon and rectal surgeon in Missoula, Montana. He graduated with honors from Wayne State University School Of Medicine in 2006 and completed his general surgery residency at the Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center Surgical Residency Program in 2011. Dr. Zehnpfennig moved to Montana after residency and began practice as a general surgeon. After caring for Montanans' surgical needs for 8 years, it became apparent that many Montanans had to leave Montana for specialty care in colon and rectal surgery. To address this problem, Dr. Zehnpfennig pursued additional training at the University of Texas McGovern Medical School at the Texas Medical Center in Houston from 2019-2020 where he completed a fellowship in minimally-invasive colon and rectal surgery. Returning to Missoula after specialty training, Dr. Zehnpfennig now practices primarily colon and rectal surgery with an emphasis on advanced, minimally-invasive techniques utilizing the Intuitive da Vinci surgical platform. He is the only surgeon in Montana performing colon resection with totally-intracorporeal anastomosis and natural-orifice specimen extraction. He also maintains an interest in minimally-invasive/robotic abdominal wall reconstruction to repair large hernias. With over a decade of diverse general surgery experience recently honed by a year in fellowship, Dr. Michael J Zehnpfennig affiliates with many hospitals including Community Medical Center and Providence St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula. He is the director of Montana Colon and is a member of CPG Surgical Associates, but he collaborates with other doctors and specialists throughout western Montana.
