About Michael W. Harmon
Dr. Harmon is a board certified Radiation Oncologist. He has been practicing radiation oncology in Humboldt County for over 25 years. He is the Medical Director of the department of Radiation Oncology at St. Joseph Hospital and he serves on the St. Joseph Hospital Cancer Committee. Dr. Harmon was instrumental in developing the department policy of having all patients treated according to the NCCN Guidelines unless the guidelines are contraindicated due to other health problems. The NCCN Guidelines are written by subspecialty oncolgy experts at major cancer centers such as UCSF, Stanford, Mayo Clinic and Harvard.
These guidelines describe precisely how radiation therapy and chemotherapy is given based on the latest research. A patient receiving chemotherapy at St. Joseph Hospital will receive the exact same chemotherapy drugs, on the exact same days, and in the exact same dosage as being delivered at the major cancer centers. Radiation therapy is also given according to the NCCN Guidelines which describe the type of radiation, the radiation fields, and the total dose of radiation. Dr. Harmon reviews the NCCN Guidelines with every patient and then after carefully evaluating the patient, he determines if the guidelines need to be modified to meet the patient's Individual needs and treatment goals.
Dr. Harmon also gives the patient a copy of their CT scan and PET scan so the patient can see their tumor and understand how the radiation is given. He places a high priority on answering all of the patients questions before starting treatment. In his free time Dr. Harmon enjoys kiteboarding and surfing with his wife and his two sons.
