What someone with dementia needs most.

Alzheimer’s is the only disease in the top 10 causes of death in the United States that cannot be prevented, slowed, or cured.

While that is the bad news, there is good news on the Alzheimer’s front, according to David Troxel, MPH, a graduate of nearby Whitman College, who has spent 38 years working in the memory care field and is recognized as an international expert on the subject.

“We now do know how to give good care for people living with cognitive loss,” he said. “There’s a right way and a wrong way to do dementia care. You can learn some of the techniques and ideas that can help you be more effective professionally or personally as a caregiver.  You can help the person with dementia live his or her best life.”

We all need a friend.

For people living with dementia, the world can be frustrating and frightening; they don’t always understand what is happening to them and around them. Imagine being in a foreign country where you don’t know the customs or speak the language.
