Providence Santa Rosa Memorial receives national recognition for stroke care

We are excited to share that Providence Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital once again received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus quality achievement award for its commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines.

Memorial also was listed on the “Target: Stroke Honor Roll” with 75% of applicable patients experiencing door to needle times of 60 minutes or less. In addition, we were listed on the “Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll” for providing quality care for diabetes patients.

“This award is a reflection of our caregivers commitment to improving patient care by adhering to the latest stroke guidelines,” Chief Executive Chuck Kassis said. “The recognition is a testament to the talent we have on our team and our nurses, doctors and staff members dedication to not only saving lives but also reducing recovery times and readmissions to the hospital.”

Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death in the U.S. and No. 3 in Sonoma County, while being the leading cause of disability both nationally and countywide. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so brain cells die. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times.

Get With The Guidelines-Stroke was developed to assist health care professionals to provide the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines for treating stroke patients. The in-hospital program promotes consistent adherence to these guidelines, which can minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death.

Each year, program participants qualify for the award by demonstrating how their organization has committed to providing quality care for stroke patients. In addition to following treatment guidelines, Get With The Guidelines participants also educate patients to help them manage their health and recovery at home.
