Providence St. Patrick Hospital earns Comprehensive Cardiac Center Certification from The Joint Commission

Providence St. Patrick Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Comprehensive Cardiac Center Certification effective through June 2025—a first in the hospital’s history.

“Congratulations to the dedicated team of physicians, nurses, caregivers and others who worked together to help achieve this accomplishment,” said Kirk Bodlovic, Interim Chief Executive, Providence Montana. “It is a team effort, and we couldn’t attain our superior level of cardiac care without everyone doing their part.”

The multi-disciplinary Providence Heart Institute and hospital teams underwent a rigorous site review earlier this summer. Hospitals meeting program requirements for Comprehensive Cardiac Center Certification are awarded this certification for providing advanced, comprehensive cardiovascular care, treatment, and services. During the visit, a team of Joint Commission reviewers evaluated programs within the Institute and hospital: cardiac surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, electrophysiology, structural heart, cardiac imaging, emergency department, intensive care unit, cardiac OR and inpatient unit.

Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. The reviewers conducted onsite observations and interviews, and a significant proportion of the time was spent on individual patient tracing to evaluate our provision of care, treatment and services using the patient’s experience as a guide.

The Joint Commission evaluated these services:

  • Acute myocardial infarction
  • Cardiac rehabilitation
  • Heart failure
  • Cardiac arrest/resuscitation
  • Coronary artery bypass
  • Diagnostic cardiac catheterization
  • Valve replacement/repair
  • Percutaneous coronary intervention
  • ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI)
  • Arrhythmia management

“Comprehensive Cardiac Center Certification recognizes health care organizations committed to fostering continuous improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” says Deborah Ryan, MS, RN, interim executive vice president, Accreditation and Certification Operations, The Joint Commission. “We commend Providence St. Patrick Hospital for using certification to reduce variation in its clinical processes and to strengthen its program structure and management framework for cardiac patients.”
