Providence draws large crowd for annual nurse hiring event

Providence hospitals in Humboldt County successfully completed their annual nursing hiring event on May 16, a key initiative in strengthening staff levels at both Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka (SJE) and Providence Redwood Memorial Hospital (RMH).

The event, which saw a total of 97 RSVPs from interested applicants primarily hailing from Humboldt County and the College of the Redwoods Nurse Program, was the first in-person interview session held since before the Covid-19 pandemic, signifying a return to a more personal and interactive approach to hiring.

“We’re thrilled with the outcome, which not only attracted a high number of qualified applicants but also underscored our commitment to supporting our nursing staff and ultimately, our community.” said Sarah Park, RN, MSN, interim chief nursing officer.

A total of 44 nurses were interviewed during the event, resulting in 40 job offers being extended, showcasing the hospital's commitment to recruiting top talent in the field.

Notably, first year nurse turnover (FITO) ratios – the number of nurses who leave their role within the first year – was 17% in 2023 at SJE and RMH. A 2023 report from NSI Nursing Solutions, states that 33% of new hospital nurses leave their jobs within the first year, 16% higher than SJE and RMH.

Park shares part of the success in Humboldt is due to the Clinical Academy Transition into Practice program that “supports the professional development of recently graduated residents and new-to-specialty (fellows) nurses and provides an integrated, consistent structure for mentoring, nurse onboarding and development.”

The program ensures Providence has a stable nursing workforce and helps fill the gap of our current nursing shortage. It also helps provide reliably prepared nurses for hard-to-fill specialty positions and advanced practice nursing roles, which are essential for Providence's growth and new care models.
