Background:
In 1918, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice, signaling a temporary halt to fighting, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany, marking the ceasefire of hostilities in what was then called "the Great War." The following year, this date was observed as Armistice Day in various countries. In the United States, it was established as a federal holiday in 1938. After World War II and the Korean War, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans.
