‘Everybody can be great … because anybody can serve’: Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

On Jan. 20, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a National Day of Service. The observance acknowledges his contributions to society and encourages participation in initiatives, activities and events that honor his legacy and advance efforts toward a more equitable society for all.

A prominent figure in the civil rights movement, Dr. King advocated for equality and human rights for all, including African Americans, economically disadvantaged persons, and victims of injustice. He promoted non-violence and used his voice and words to inspire change.

As we reflect on Dr. King’s legacy, consider his enduring voice and its profound impact. His call to action remains relevant and compelling across generations. Its resonance continues to inspire meaningful actions and progress.

Some of Dr. King’s most notable achievements include:

  • Leadership of the 1955-1956 Montgomery bus boycott, which led the Supreme Court to declare segregation on buses unconstitutional.
  • Organization of the March on Washington in 1963, at which he delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech to more than a quarter million people.
  • Key influencer of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed segregation and created the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
  • Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and was the youngest person to have received the award.
  • The first official Martin Luther King Jr. Day was celebrated in 1986 and is the only federal holiday commemorating an African American.
