Providence Little Company of Mary Torrance Ranked High Performing for Maternity Care for Third Consecutive Year

U.S. News & World Report recognizes excellence for moms and newborns

U.S. News & World Report recognized Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance for the third straight year for high performance in maternity care with an award that measures quality and safety for mother and baby.

U.S. News began evaluating maternity care hospitals in 2021, rating hospitals that provide labor and delivery services and submit detailed data to the publication for analysis. Best Hospitals for Maternity Care assist expectant parents, in consultation with their prenatal care team, in making informed decisions about where to receive maternity services that best meets their family’s needs.

“Our hospitals are committed to providing a quality birthing experience to ensure the health of both mother and baby,” said Laureen Driscoll, chief executive of Providence South Division, serving all of California. “Across our organization, we have focused on reducing C-section rates, ensuring all patients the best quality care, recognizing patients’ unique needs and sending families home with the knowledge they need to care for their newborns.”

Providence Little Company of Mary earned high performing designations in recognition of maternity care as measured by factors such as severe unexpected newborn complication rates, birthing-friendly practices and transparency on racial/ethnic disparities, among other measures.

This rating indicates exemplary performance on a range of quality measures. Of the record 817 hospitals that submitted data to U.S. News this year, 414 were rated high performing.

“The hospitals recognized by U.S. News as Best Hospitals for Maternity Care showcase exceptional care for expectant parents,” said Jennifer Winston, Ph.D., health data scientist at U.S. News. “These hospitals demonstrate significantly lower C-section rates and severe unexpected newborn complications compared to hospitals not recognized by U.S. News.”

The U.S. News Best Hospitals for Maternity Care methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality that also include exclusive breast milk feeding rates, birthing-friendly practices and reporting on racial/ethnic disparities.
