Providence Holy Cross Medical Center earns top award for Patient Safety Excellence for the fifth straight year

Providence Holy Cross Medical Center was honored with the
2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award, placing it among the
nation’s safest acute care hospitals evaluated by Healthgrades.

This marks the fifth consecutive time Healthgrades, a leading consumer health website, has honored Providence Holy Cross
with this annual award, ranking the Mission Hills hospital in the
top 5 percent of the nation’s hospitals for safety.

“Our commitment to safety is ingrained in our culture at Holy Cross, from the executive offices to doctors and clinicians and, importantly, to the teams who keep our hospital clean and in good repair at all times,” said Bernard Klein, M.D., the hospital’s chief executive. “Excellent safety is key to excellent patient care."

Proving Dr. Klein’s point, Holy Cross was named among America’s 50 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades, which recognizes excellence and outstanding patient outcomes.

Dr. Klein cited the commitment across Providence to its culture of “high reliability,” which drives efforts to recognize that health care workers’ greatest responsibility is the safety of their patients and one another. Clinical caregivers are required to take part in this training, which emphasizes safety and teaches techniques and behaviors that have been proven to reduce error and improve safety in high-stress environments, including health care.

Holy Cross’ achievements are based solely on what matters most: patient outcomes, according to Healthgrades. To determine the top-performing hospitals for patient safety, Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates for approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide. Healthgrades’ analysis revealed significant performance gaps between the nation’s highest- and lowest-achieving facilities, making it increasingly important for consumers to seek care at a hospital with top safety ratings.

From 2021-2023, through much of the pandemic, 173,280 preventable safety events occurred among Medicare patients in U.S. hospitals, with four patient safety indicators accounting for nearly 76 percent of these incidents.* The annual study found that patients treated in hospitals that received the 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award have a significantly lower chance of experiencing one of the four leading safety indicators than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals:

  • In-hospital falls resulting in fracture (54 percent less likely)
  • Collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest (approximately 55 percent less likely)
  • Pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital (approximately 69 percent less likely)
  • Catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital (72 percent less likely)

“As a 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient, Providence Holy Cross consistently puts the well-being of its patients and staff at the forefront, setting a high standard for patient safety nationwide,” said Debra Gradick, M.D. FACEP, senior physician consultant at Healthgrades. “We commend Holy Cross for providing consistently exceptional care while preventing serious injuries, giving patients their best chance of a seamless recovery.”
