About Margaret J. Black
Before she went to medical school, Dr. Margaret Black worked as a doula; this exciting work sparked a passion for caring for patients during life’s big moments. Board-certified in family medicine with a concentration in obstetrics, Dr. Black welcomes patients of all ages and genders. "I especially enjoy pregnancy care, women's health, and pediatrics, including adolescent medicine," Dr. Black says. As a Suboxone (buprenorphine) prescriber, she also extends her skill and compassion to patients working through addiction and substance abuse.
In her practice today, Dr. Black's empathy informs her philosophy of care. She explains, "I love hearing about my patients' lives and backgrounds, and exploring how that influences how they experience living in their bodies, and what that means for their health goals." Dr. Black hopes to empower patients through active listening; she also aims to ensure they feel safe and free of judgment.
Dr. Black earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Vassar College and completed her medical degree at Tulane University. She continued to the University of New Mexico for her residency training.
While growing up, Dr. Black’s family made many international moves, so she feels like a citizen of the world. "I'm happy to be putting down some solid roots in Portland," she says.

Dr. Black is kind, inclusive and understanding. I feel safe to discuss any topic that may come up and she always believes me and takes my issues seriously. She is also my infant sons pediatrician and they way she talks to him and treats him is so lovely. We love Dr. Black!

Dr. Black creates a welcoming environment and makes me feel comfortable to talk about my health. I feel heard and always walk away confidence in the next steps. I wish all doctors were this in tune with their patients.

I talked with Dr Black about my son today and she made me feel very relieved that at least someone is listening as my so. Has had poor care and struggling presently. She took care of my needs and also listened intently to me and I can't tell you how happy she made me today. Thank you Dr Black. Feel free to relay this and my name.

Love Dr Black. The only issue is how much other people love her too! She's hard to get into. I appreciated getting a quick reschedule appointment after she was sick and one appt was cancelled. She's great!
