About Robert Y. Goldberg
Dr. Goldberg was born and raised in San Diego, Calif. For college, he moved north to go to the University of California at Los Angeles, where he earned a BS in Biology in 1998. Dr. Goldberg then attended the Sackler School of Medicine at Tel Aviv University in Israel.
After four very exciting years in Tel Aviv, it was time to move close to home again. Dr. Goldberg completed his internship and residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles between 2003 and 2006.
At Cedars-Sinai, Dr. Goldberg realized his love for Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Following his residency, he completed a fellowship at the University of California at Irvine/Veteran's Administration at Long Beach Medical Center in 2009. While at UC Irvine, Dr. Goldberg's research efforts focused on developing models to teach trainees advanced pulmonary procedures.
One such model's description and results were published in the medical literature. This model has been used worldwide to train physicians on a bronchoscopic procedure known as Transbronchial Needle Aspiration. With this model, the physicians are able to learn and become proficient at the procedure without placing patients at risk.
His interests include asthma, COPD, lung cancer, as well as the care of critically ill patients.
Additionally, Dr. Goldberg has an interest in less invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
Dr. Goldberg has been involved in starting many innovative programs at Mission Hospital, such as Bronchial Thermoplasty and Robotic Bronchoscopy. The Bronchial Thermoplasty program to treat severe asthma was one of the first and most active programs in Southern California. Dr Goldberg began 2 robotic Bronchoscopy programs: first the Monarch Robotic Bronchoscopy system and more recently the Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy System to allow for biopsy and possible treatment of lung lesions in a less invasive and risky method.
Dr. Goldberg began and is currently one of the chairs of the Pulmonary Embolism Response Team, an innovative program to allow for rapid, and most up-to-date advanced identification and treatment for Pulmonary Emboli-blood clots in the lungs. He is currently very involved in medical leadership at Mission Hospital as the Chair of the Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee and on the Medical Executive Committee.
Dr. Goldberg is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
In his spare time, Dr. Goldberg enjoys spending time with his family, golfing and biking, as well as rooting for his UCLA Bruins.
